Heavenly Bodies

On August 21, 2017, North America experienced a solar eclipse. I took my children to the park and watched through protective glasses as the moon moved between the Earth and the sun. I was not directly in the area of totality, but I did get to see an eclipse of about 85%. I also saw the total eclipse through NASA's coverage and that of others who were in the zone of the total eclipse. Either way, it was an awesome sight. I noticed people who had superstitious views leaving the park as I arrived. There are different beliefs about the occurrence. Some are affected by ancient beliefs, and some just want to get out of the way just in case something strange happens. The rest of us are amazed by the science or the supernaturally beautiful view. There will be other solar eclipses in different parts of the world, and they will be equally awesome, but North America won't get another chance like this one until April 8, 2024.

They dance across continents, oceans, and time

Celestial bodies in an arrangement divine

Both gracing Earth’s sky throughout day and night

Casting bright spells with mysterious light

One burns with a fire that denies a true gaze

One draws longing stares with a romantic haze

When the universe wills it, the beauties combine

The ancient orbs cross in a matchless design

The Moon in her darkness overshadows the Sun

And in the totality, the sisters are one

The blazing of gold surrounds a dark sphere

Great numbers bear witness in joy, awe, and fear

But as they conclude the sacred convergence

We ardently anticipate the next reemergence
